On 4th September 2016, 14 Upper Sixth students (6 males and 8 females) braved the long bus, boat and 'temuai' journey from PTET to Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre in Temburong. They were all to stay for a total of 4 days and 3 nights at the centre, experiencing life as field Biologists. Following a scrumptious breakfast, they spent the morning of their second day hiking up the Ashton trail. They came across many species of trees, shrubs, herbs, ferns and fungi as they walked, and our very own Lee Kuan Fu impressed us all with his vast knowledge of local plants and their medicinal uses!
Their hardwork was rewarded with another 'temuai' ride to Ulu Ulu Temburong National Park the next day. At the park, students crossed a hanging bridge, hiked up a hill and climbed up the wobbly, metal staircase that led to the canopy walk. The trip was an ordeal to many, but they pressed on for the sake of knowledge and experience (and internet connection!). Glad they were, for the breathtaking view, and the sense of accomplishment, once they reached the top was one they truly appreciated and cherished. Once they reached KBFSC, they wasted no time to cool down and relax in the pristine streams of Kuala Belalong. The night ended with a very heated debate over the protection of endangered species. As budding Biologists, it is an issue that is dear to their hearts and firmly supported. The night, however, saw the victory of the opposition team, highlighting the difficulties in persuading the general public in the importance of conservation. All in all, students find the Residential Programme to be an eye-opening and inspiring experience, and many (including Amirul, who dreaded the wilderness with its lack of technological comfort and abundance of venomous beings - his words) wished they could stay longer! Thank you very much for the memories, KBFSC. We will be back for sure! For more pictures, click below:
