In Biology, we ask questions, make observations, evaluate evidence, and solve problems. We learn how living things work, how they interact with one another, and how they evolve. Research in Biology increases our understanding about the world around us and tackles issues on personal well-being, as well as those of global concern, such as climate change, threats to human health and maintaining viable and abundant food supplies.
what do biologists do?
There are several career paths you can follow as a Biologist.
Research biologists study the natural world using the latest scientific advancements, both in laboratory settings and outside during field studies. Many work in exotic locations around the world. Through their discoveries, we increase our knowledge and understanding of biology, which may then be put to practical use to find solutions to current problems.
Locally, there is keen interest in the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) to study the flora and fauna of Brunei. Afterall, we are situated at the Heart of Borneo, one of the most ecologically diverse, yet less extensively researched, areas.
Research, however, is not exclusively done in universities. Many also happen across departments and ministries of the Brunei Government, such as Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. |
To be a researcher, you need to have a PhD in Biology. Find out more about some local research interests below:

Health Care
Doctors, nurses and other health professionals require knowledge on how the body works, reacts to illnesses and responds to medicine. Thus, they require sound biological understanding. But biologists working in health care don't all stay in wards and labs of hospitals.
In Brunei, they may work in the Health Promotion Centre to develop public health campaigns to defeat illnesses such as AIDS, diabetes and heart disease.

Some may work in the office of the Ministry of Health, discussing ways to prevent the spread of rare, infectious diseases, such as the now infamous Ebola and Zika virus.

Environmental management and conservation
Biologists in management and conservation careers are interested in solving environmental problems and conserving the natural world for future generations. They help preserve natural resources and work closely with the community to develop and implement management plans. Other local employment opportunities may exist with not-for-profit conservation organisations (e.g. BruWILD), private ecological consulting firms, or wildlife rehabilitation centers.

Education
Life science educators enjoy working with people and encouraging them to learn new things, whether in a classroom, a research lab, the field, or a museum.
